Pão Doce
(Sweet Bread)
Portuguese Sweet Bread

Ingredients
| 5 |
pounds all-purpose white flour |
| 2 |
dozen eggs |
| 4 |
cups sugar |
| 1 |
pinch of salt |
| 4 |
cubes margarine |
| 4 |
dry yeast cake packages |
Instructions
- Yeast Mixture:
- Mix ingredients below by hand. Mix until soft. Put aside to rise one hour
- 3 cups warm water
- 4 dry yeast cake packages
- 3 cups flour
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- Dough Mixture:
- Using a mixer on medium speed, combine:
- pinch of salt
- 4 cups sugar
- 2 dozen eggs
- Dough
- Mix 5 pounds of white flour in large bread tub with Dough Mixture (above)
- Add Yeast Mixture
- Melt 4 Cubes of Butter
- Add Melted butter to Mixture
- Knead by hand
- Cover bread tub with a clean towel and let rise for 5 - 6 hours
Grease pie plates with Crisco (shortening). Grease hands and tear off enough dough to shape it into a ball.
Cover dough on pie pans with a towel and let rise for another 5 - 6 hours.
Heat Oven to 275°F. A large bread takes an hour, a small one takes thirty minutes.
