Antonio Sousa
November 1, 1936 - December 8, 2009

Antonio Sousa passed away peacefully at home on December 8, 2009, at the age of 73. Born on November 1, 1936, in the southern Portuguese fishing village of Fuseta, he began his commercial fishing career at the age of thirteen. Along with his father and three brothers, he fished for cod and tuna around the world. In 1966, Antonio and his wife Zulmira immigrated to San Diego with their young daughter, Nella. A year later, their son Richard was born. He and his family became an integral part of the local tuna fleet, as well as the Point Loma Portuguese community. Antonio retired from fishing in 1996 and spent many days doting on his beloved grandchildren, Antony and Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife Zulmira, children Nella (David) Landau and Richard, grandchildren Anthony and Elizabeth, and brothers Manuel, Alfred and Jack. His warm smile, gentle spirit and clever wit will be missed by many.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 17th, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with Rosary at 6:00 p.m. at Clairemont Mortuary, 4266 Mt. Abernathy Avenue. Funeral Service will be Friday, December 18th, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church, followed by the burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to San Diego Hospice.
