Manuel Jorge Silva quietly passed away on September 1, 2008, at 94 years of age. He lived an arduous and adventurous life that encompassed dedication to family, integrity and honor. He was born on February 9, 1914, in Santa Cruz das Ribeiras, Pico, Acores, Portugal to Jose Silveira Jorge da Silva and Maria Candida da Silva. As so many before, he immigrated to Point Loma with his family in 1961. For a great number of years, he was a commercial tuna fisherman. Prior to that, he was a whaler in the tradition of Captain Courageous, subjected to the whims, perils, and allure of the seas. In his later years, he took pride in nurturing the gardens of a great many people. He had such a green thumb his roses and orchids were renown in the neighborhood. He was an honorable and traditional man with old world values whose word was his bond. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Maria Branca Silva. His two sons: Manuel E. Silva (Elvira, deceased) of Pico, Azores, Portugal and George A. Silva, Attorney at Law (Denise) of Point Loma. Two grandchildren: Michael E. Silva (Kristen) of San Diego and Karen S. Goulart (Amilcar) of Pico, Azores, Portugal and five great-grandchildren. May God grant him eternal rest and may his progeny always strive to keep his loving memories within their hearts. Memorial service to be held on Saturday, September 13th, at 11:00 a.m., at Saint Agnes Catholic Church.
