Sue Joan Marks passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving Day with her son and daughter at her side. Sue was born in San Diego to Italian immigrants, Emilie and Tony Costantino, who arrived in the U.S. via Ellis Island. Sue graduated from San Diego High School, the Gray Castle. She married the love of her life, Janous Marks, in 1937 at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Little Italy. They were married 66 years, until Janous' death in 2003. Janous was active in the tuna fishing industry in San Diego his entire life. Sue and Janous were charter members of Cabrillo Civic Club #16, and Sue was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. In Janous' capacity as vice president at Sun Harbor tuna cannery, Sue and Janous traveled often. Over the years, they were owners of several tuna boats. After Janous retired, Sue and Janous continued to travel, especially to Italy, Portugal, and Gloucester, Massachusetts. In 1953, Sue and Janous purchased the first lot in the Rodefer Hills section of Mission Hills. Since it was Mr. Rodefer's birthday this particular day, he gave Sue her choice of any of his lots. Sue and Janous lived in Mission Hills the rest of their lives. Sue is predeceased by her husband, Janous Marks; her sisters, Betty Vietti and Dorothy (Jackie) Silva; brother-in-law Andrew Silva; and nephew John Castiglione. We take comfort that she is with them now. Sue is survived by her son, Richard Anthony; daughter, Marjorie; her son-in-law, Mark McCool; her cocker spaniel Dudley; niece Sally Castiglione; nieces Gina Espinoza (Jorge) and Lisa Jacob (Matt); nephew John Castiglione (Jamie); and honorary family members Jennifer, David, and Max Plouff. She will be missed deeply and forever. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested in Sue's name to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103. Our appreciation of the staff's gentle care of our mother cannot be expressed in words. And a very special hug goes to Baxter, the Therapy Dog.
Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 5, 2008, at 9 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1140 Evergreen Street, San Diego, CA 92106. Arrangements handled by Merkley Mitchell Mortuary.
