Joseph Madruga

Joe passed peacefully away with his loving wife Adeline, of 65 years, by his side. He is survived by his seven sons and their wives or loved ones Joseph Jr. (Mary); Jim (Brenda); John (Lisa); Laura; Brian (Teresa); Jeff (Karen); Matthew (Kelly); and Mark (Brenda). He has 16 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was a pioneer in the U.S. Tuna Fishing Industry. He began fishing at the age of 12 and by the time he was 18 he was the youngest Tuna Captain ever. He owned over 22 purse seiners (fishing vessels) in his lifetime. At the time when his country needed him, he gave not only his time, but his livelihood as the Navy took possession of his families' boat "The Paramount" for World War II and converted it to a YP boat. He would transport food, soldiers and supplies, a vital part of winning the war in the Pacific. His boat was attacked and was able to divert the spray of bullets to bring the cargo safely in. When he returned to civilian life, he resumed his career as Captain and owner of multiple fishing vessels and was President of the American Tuna Boat Association. He gave generously to multiple non-profit organizations and was an active member of the Portuguese Hall.

A Mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 1140 Evergreen St., at 9:45 a.m., Saturday, June 27th. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Sharp Hospice Care.
