Edmund Anthony Gann, age 86, passed away peacefully at his home in Rancho Santa Fe on Friday, February 5, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grand-father, Edmund was born on October 10, 1923 in the fishing town of Gloucester, Massachusetts, to Vincent and Nazareth Gann. While still a child, his family migrated to San Diego, California, where his father built and operated a commercial fishing clipper. During World War II, Edmund served with the United States Navy. Following discharge, he went to work as manager of San Diego Famous Market. From there, he entered the fishing business, which grew into a highly successful tuna-fishing fleet operation. Although the fishing industry was his passion, Edmund Gann also had interests in the oil industry, banking, hardware, and real estate development. In the mid-1960's, Edmund Gann entered into what became his most loved hobby - Thoroughbred horse racing. He began building a solid stable by buying horses in the United States and Europe. He loved following his horses all over the world to watch them race. Above all, Edmund Gann was a man that was loved and cherished by those that were lucky enough to know him personally. He accomplished many great things in his lifetime and was a man of great character; expecting great character of the people he loved and had business relationships with. He will be missed deeply and cherished in our hearts forever. Edmund is survived by his wife Bernice Gann of Rancho Santa Fe; brother Joseph Gann of San Diego; sister Lil Frietas of La Mesa; daughter Diana Franklin-Mello of San Diego; grandchildren Sherry Drinkard of San Diego, Shelly Peutet of Los Angeles, Christina Hatfield of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Tammy Nickel of Boise, Idaho. He had seven great-grand-children. Edmund was preceded in death by his brother Vincent Gann and his daughter Sally Robideaux. God bless you!! May you find peace with your brother and daughter in heaven. We love you!!!
