Coach Bennie Edens started his illustrious career at Point Loma High School in 1955 as the head coach of the football team. During his tenure, he coached hundreds of our Point Loma Portuguese-American young men. His accomplishments include four CIF football titles (1962, 1966, 1982, 1987), 1966 San Diego County High School Football Coach of the Year, 1981 California Athletic Director of the Year, 1981 All-San Diego County Football Coach of the Year and the 1983 Southern Section Coach of the Year. Bennie Edens continued to coach into the late 1980s and 1990s. In 1988, Mayor Maureen O'Connor proclaimed Jan. 11, 1988 Bennie Edens Day. His other accomplishments include 1992 California High School Coach of the Year and the 2002 NFL High School Coach of the Year. His teams compiled a 241-168-16 record, giving him the most victories for any football coach at one school in San Diego Section history.

In 2007, the Point Loma High School Class of 1967 ended up with a surplus of funds from their reunion. They donated the funds to the purchase of the new Pointer Dog costume. The new mascot, Bennie, was named in Coach Edens honor. Bennie the mascot made his debut at Qualcomm stadium when the Pointers faced off against the Saints for the CIF championship.

Before Christmas, Bennie had a bout with pneumonia.  At that time, the Point Loma High School Foundation & Alumni Association began a special fund for those who wished to honor Bennie, with the proceeds being used to fund scholarships for graduating seniors who have excelled in athletics, sportsmanship, scholarship and community service.  In addition, a sign honoring him was placed above the door to the Men's Locker Room.  A couple of weeks ago, Bennie was driven back to "Bennie Edens Stadium" at PLHS and proudly observed this tribute in person.  An additional sign will be installed at the PLHS Stadium on February 18th.

Services
A Memorial Service will be held at Point Loma High School's Stadium on Saturday, February 23rd at noon. 

The family has requested that donations in Bennie's memory be made to the Bennie Edens Scholarship Fund established with the Point Loma High School Foundation & Alumni Association.  Checks may be mailed to:
